Speece, Conrad:
$200 · Offered by William Reese Company
THE MOUNTAINEER...A New Edition. The third edition (revised) of this collection of pious essays, originally printed in the REPUBLICAN FARMER, and first gathered in book form in 1818. Speece held various posts in the Presbyterian hierarchy of Virginia, and these essays, in the form of letters, allowed him to vent his opinions on a wide range of topics, including a number of cautionary tales such as "Picture of a Modern Fop" and "The Drunken Husband." Also included is an essay on the University of Virginia, a couple on libraries, one on book borrowing, and quite a number on the moral upbringing of children.
