The History of the Temple of Jerusalem: First edition in English of this medieval Arabic history of Jerusalem, which also covers the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. A Sunni Muslim polymath, Al-Suyuti (1445-1505) was born in Cairo, where he lived through the final decades of the Mamluk Sultanate, when the Ottoman Empire was at the zenith of its power and influence. Al-Suyuti was tutored by a Sufi, and he was appointed head of the Sufi Lodge attached to the Mosque of al-Zahir Baybars in Cairo. He is often described as one of the most prolific writers of the Middle Ages and of Islamic literature in general.This translation was undertaken by the English orientalist James Reynolds (1805-1866), from two manuscripts in the British Museum, and is prefaced with a commentary on those manuscripts. A competent Persian and Arabic scholar, Reynolds translated several works from these two languages and superintended Ouseley's Biographical Notices of Persian Poets in 1846. He became secretary to the Oriental Translation Fund in 1837.
