Early edition of the Histoire, first edition of the Recueil: two key sources for the life of Louis XIV's liberal Archbishop of Cambrai, renowned for moderating the king's persecution of Huguenots and for his incisive critiques of Bourbon absolutism.François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon (1651-1715) was appointed archbishop in 1695, culminating a long career in the French religious hierarchy. Andrew Michael Ramsay (1686-1743), a Scottish Jacobite, travelled to study under Fénelon at Cambrai in 1710, where discussions of quietism developed into a full-blown conversion to Catholicism. After Fénelon's death, Ramsay spent several years managing his private papers and editing his works, before taking up a position at the exiled Jacobite court as tutor to the future Bonnie Prince Charlie. Abbe Jacques Galet (d. 1726) worked alongside Fénelon for many years in Paris.Two issues of Ramsay's Histoire exist with the Prevost/1723 imprint: the present issue, the scarcer of the two, has the text more closely reset and continuous pagination.
