The Origin and Development of the Chinese Customs Service, 1843-1911. First edition of this uncommon internal history, with the compliments label of Sir Frederick Maze, Inspector-General of Customs, on the front pastedown.The author (1873-1953) reached the rank of commissioner in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service and served as the personal secretary to two inspector generals. Following his retirement in 1933, he became the service's official historian and its "most prolific and ardent chronicler" (Ladds, p. 1). This work was the forerunner to his Hart and the Chinese Customs (1950).
