The first London "Apocrypha" edition, as denoted by Elliott Coues, after the first Philadelphia edition earlier that year. The London edition is described by the editors of The Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition as "[a] close reprint of the Philadelphia edition, with 'some judicious cuts in extraneous material.'" In response to the growing curiosity of the public regarding the findings of Lewis and Clark and the delay in publication of the "authorized account" of their expedition, this compilation of bits and pieces from already published works appeared, misleading the reader into believing it was the account sanctioned by the government and containing all the information gathered during the journey. Howes calls this the "counterfeit" edition, while Sabin states it contains material not published in any other edition. The map, engraved by Samuel John Neele, shows western North America.
