Firma Burgi, or an Historical Essay Concerning the Cities, Towns and Buroughs of England. First edition of this essay on the history of medieval boroughs by the king's historiographer, emphasizing the role of the crown as the basis of urban liberty. This is a very attractive copy with the gilt arms of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844), and the bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), one of the richest men in England and a notorious spendthrift.
