Suggestions Towards the Future Government of India. First edition of the social theorist's practical proposals regarding maintaining British rule in India. Martineau expands on her recently published historical account, British Rule in India (1857), to consider contemporary developments and issues such as religious liberty, equitable taxation, and education. The work was published in the aftermath of the 1857 Indian Rebellion and the beginning of Crown rule. Martineau (1802-1876) sought to examine the implications of this new political structure and point out the mistakes of past governance: "The time has arrived which will determine whether we shall lose India very soon, or keep it as a more valuable portion of the British Empire than it has ever been yet".
