A Short Account of the Life and Writings of Robert Barclay. First edition of Bevan's memoir on the life of Robert Barclay of Urie (1648-1690), Scottish Quaker and absentee governor of East New Jersey from 1682. Though he never travelled there himself, Barclay spent the final decade of his short life promoting Quaker colonial enterprises and Scottish emigration. "Upwards of 700 Scots, mainly form the north-east, moved to East New Jersey in ithe 1680s, but immigration slumped after 1690 with the fall of James II and the death of Barclay" (ODNB).
