Battle Honours: Afghanistan. Apparently unpublished research piece on the battle honours of the Anglo-Afghan Wars by the widely published historian of military traditions, Major T. J. Edwards (1886-1956). This copy has an attractive provenance, coming from the library of the military historian Alan Harfield, who himself published extensively on the British Army in India, with his ownership blindstamp to the front free endpaper and his pencil and ink annotations to the text.Edwards, who served with the 11th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment during the First World War, offers brief summaries of the three Anglo-Afghan Wars, then lists the correct style, date, and military background to each named honour, the regiments entitled to it, and the authorities for the commendation. Edwards published a short piece in the RUSI Journal looking into the history of the practice and efforts to standardise it over time.Major Alan G. Harfield (1926-?) was formerly Deputy Director of the Royal Signals Museum who published many works related to British military history, including numerous studies on the British Indian Army.
