Darwin, and after Darwin. US editions, being the second edition of the first volume, and the first editions of the second two volumes (the UK editions were published the same years). Romanes (1848-1894) had a considerable influence on the study of Darwinism in the later 19th century. "A decisive influence on his activity and scientific work, in 1874, was when he received a brief but friendly note from Charles Darwin, in response to a letter by Romanes to [the journal] Nature. Romanes subsequently visited Darwin at Down House in Kent. Darwin responded warmly to a young and enthusiastic disciple, and Romanes came almost to worship Darwin. It is likely this relationship reinforced Romanes's growing commitment to science as the objective source of truth, and it certainly determined the evolutionary agenda of all his subsequent research" (ODNB).
