William de Morgan wrote this novel, one of his first, when he was in his sixties, after spending his life as a potter and tile designer. He was lifelong friends with William Morris and designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co. from 1863 to 1872. In 1907, he left the pottery business
