First edition of this popular comparison of British and French political economies, in an elaborately gilt-tooled French red morocco binding. It "quickly became the talk of Paris, went into a second edition within a fortnight, and two more before the end of the year. Mainstream periodicals excerpted the book, and even the king claimed to be reading it" (Shovlin, p. 45).Although it purported to be a translation, the Remarques was an original work published by Plumard de Dangeul using his English pseudonym, John Nickolls. The work drew heavily on Josiah Tucker's Brief Essay (1750), paraphrasing and even copying large passages. Plumard de Dangeul supplemented this with examples from French economic history, with the overall effect of introducing Tucker's thought to Enlightenment France.
