First edition of the author's earliest book, which "foretold the precise route by which classical political economy would finally be subverted" (Biernacki, p. 278). This work, which Bernhardi hoped would win his acceptance into the Russian Academy of Science, predicted the upheaval of Marx and Engels' theories later in the century.Bernhardi rejects the individualism of Smith and Ricardo, and in particular Smith's assertion that the price and quantity of labour are equivalent. Criticizing their failure to differentiate the commercial and concrete value of labour, Bernhardi promotes equal support for all scales of landed proprietorship, and displays his alliance to the German idealists through his conception of duration and tariffs on grain. This book cemented Bernhardi as the greatest of the Germano-Russian school (Spann, p. 202).
