A group of books from the library of the economist Peter Jay (1937-2024), reflecting his wide-ranging economic and political interests, all with his booklabels, most with inscriptions to him, the remainder with presentation cards, letters, or slips.Jay was fast-tracked from Oxford into the Treasury; the collection opens with The Treasury (1964) by Edward Bridges, former Permanent Secretary. In 1967, he was appointed economics editor of The Times, where he remained for ten years. In this role he was a key figure in Britain's shift from Keynesianism to monetarism in the 1970s and was central to the popularization and normalization of Milton Friedman's ideas. He helped draft his father-in-law, Prime Minister James Callaghan's, speech to the Labour Party conference in 1976, which marked the start of a national policy shift entrenched and intensified after Margaret Thatcher's election. Jay served as the British Ambassador to the United States from 1977 to 1979 - the collection includes four books by David Owen, who was British Foreign Secretary at the same time. In the 1980s, he focused on broadcasting and media editing. In the 1990s, he served as economics editor at the BBC.
