Memoirs. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title page to Peter Jay, "To Peter, who will remember many of the occasions. William. 5 July 2011"; Jay's booklabel is on the front free endpaper.Rees-Mogg was editor of The Times from 1967 to 1981; Peter Jay was economics editor from 1967 to 1977. He writes here, "The star of our new recruitment to the Business News was Peter Jay, whose work was to change national economic policy. More than anyone else, he introduced monetarism to Britain... Peter soon became a friend; he was a major personal and professional asset to me" (pp. 146-7). Rees-Mogg credits Jay for his own conversion to monetarism, and their use of The Times to promote it was instrumental in the British government's shift away from Keynesianism in the 1970s, later entrenched and intensified by Margaret Thatcher.Rees-Mogg's memoirs recount his multifaceted career as editor and public servant, in which he was always seen as "as a quintessential figure of 'the establishment'" (ODNB). It includes a chapter, "My Road to Bibliomania", on his book collection and his purchase of the rare bookseller and publisher Pickering & Chatto.
