Report from the Select Committee, to whom the several Petitions Complaining of the Depressed State of the Agriculture of The United Kingdom, were referred; First editions of the parliamentary reports on the nation's agricultural troubles; Ricardo served on both committees.The first committee sat in 1821. The report was drafted by William Huskisson but substantially revised in committee along protectionist lines. Ricardo wrote to McCulloch that, "considering the composition of the committee it is better than could be expected" (Sraffa, p. xxv). The second committee sat in 1822 and was largely composed of the same members. Its report was strongly protectionist and prompted a prolonged debate in the House, ending with the passage of a new Corn Law despite Ricardo's opposition.
