Principles of Political Economy. First edition of this key work by the Canadian-American polymath (1835-1909), described by Keynes as "one of those original works which a fresh scientific mind, not perverted by having read too much of the orthodox stuff, is able to produce from time to time in a half-formed subject like economics" (A Treatise on Money, vol. 1, p. 233). His study of "the societary circulation" was a major influence on Irving Fisher's The Purchasing Power of Money and its definition of the equation of exchange (1911).
