Second edition of the definitive 19th-century history of Ballarat, first published in 1870, which provides insight into the gold rush era in Victoria, Australia. This copy is from the library of the Birmingham Assay Office, with its stamp on the front free endpaper. Founded in May 1773, it is one of four such offices in the UK responsible for testing and hallmarking precious metals.
