England and the Octopus. First edition of this characterful invective against contemporary architecture. The architect and colourful society figure Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978) was an early and vocal opponent of unregulated urban sprawl, which he styled an "octopus". He was a founder of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England and helped establish the South Downs National Park.His own architectural work included the Italianate village of Portmeirion, North Wales, which he completed the year before the publication of this book.
