Théorie générale de l'emploi, de l'intérêt et de la monnaie. First edition in French of Keynes's General Theory, for which he provided a special preface written in February 1939. This copy is from the library of Jacques Rueff and has his extensive underlining, marginalia and reading notes on inserted leaves. Rueff (1896-1978), a major French economist of the 20th century, was a leading critic of the central thesis of Keynes's General Theory. His copy of the Théorie bears evidence of careful reading, probably at more than one reprise. There are marginal marks, underlining, and annotation in a mixture of pencil, blue ballpoint, and red ink, and over 15 loosely inserted sheets of reading notes and remarks, news clippings, and place markers, one a desk diary leaf from September 1947.The translation, undertaken by Jean de Largentaye for the Payot publishing house, was started in April 1938 and finished in June 1939, and publication was planned for 15 September. The war intervened, and the book did not appear until the autumn of 1942, in a print run of 2,000 copies, which had sold out by the end of the year.Rueff's article, "The Fallacies of Lord Keynes's General Theory" was first published in English in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in May 1947, following its first appearance as "Les erreurs de la Théorie générale de Lord Keynes" in the Revue d'économie politique earlier that year.
