A colour bar chart illustrates Saudi Arabia's rapid growth as an oil producer after 1946. The introduction stresses the region's importance to emerging Cold War geopolitics: "Middle Eastern oil is a major element in the economies of Europe and the East. It is essential to the defence of the free world" (p. 5).
