Traité politique et économique des communes, ou observations sur l'agriculture, First edition of this study of common lands in the ancien régime, arguing that such lands should be divided among the poor. Jean-François de Barandiéry-Montmayeur d'Essuile (1718-c.1790) criticizes the influence of large-scale private farmers and highlights the increasing numbers of common beggars. In this, Essuile differs from the physiocrats, who argued forcefully that common ownership of land was a serious obstacle to agricultural development. Essuile, an army captain, contributed to several land and infrastructure projects, including those providing drinking water and canal networks.Provenance: the Monteynard family library at the Chateau de Tencin, near Grenoble.
