Tin Mining in Larut. First edition of this scarce economic study, published shortly after the conclusion of the Larut and Perak wars, which put an end to opposition to British influence in Perak and stabilized control over the region's lucrative mining deposits. The Larut War (1861-1874) was fought between rival Chinese groups for political and economic superiority in Perak, and it was only brought to an end by the Pangkor Treaty and the appointing of a British Resident, James W. W. Birch (1826-1875). Birch's assassination barely a year into his tenure sparked another conflict, victory in which gave the British the room to depose local rulers including Lela Pandak Lam, Sultan Abdullah II, and Ngah Ibrahim. The mining industry quickly grew, and the author, an engineer and a member of the Royal Asiatic Society, is keen to show the immense revenues and profits awaiting ambitious entrepreneurs. The maps show the Malay Peninsula and Larut's Tupai, Assam Kumbeng, and Kamunting mining districts.
