The Scope and Method of Political Economy. First edition of the author's analysis of contemporary economic methodologies, "the standard text on economic methods for the new Cambridge school led by Alfred Marshall" (New Palgrave III). John Neville Keynes (1852-1949), a philosopher, administrator and economist, taught moral sciences at Cambridge from 1884-1911. In the Scope and Method, Keynes sought to reconcile the then-prevalent inductive and deductive approaches to economics. The work "clarified contentious issues and explained the approach adopted by leading contemporary theorists, in Europe and the USA as well as Britain. This carefully researched monograph attracted favourable reviews and created an international reputation for Keynes as an economist" (ODNB).
