Report on Japanese Assets in Soviet-Occupied Korea to the President of the United States. First edition, first printing, of this preliminary briefing compiled by Truman's personal representative on war reparations. Marked "restricted", copies were primarily provided for the use of institutions, leaving examples now rarely encountered in commerce. The author (1903-1981) was a leading figure in America's post-war assessment of the costs and compensations associated with the Second World War, serving at ambassador rank on the Allied Commission on Reparations, 1945-7, in which role he reported directly to Truman. Following instructions issued by the President on 27 April 1945, Pauley led a mission to Korea in May and June 1946, and his resulting report provides a wealth of data on the state of the Korean economy, the manoeuvrings of the Soviet Union, and America's evolving concerns regarding its erstwhile ally.Comparison with other copies of this report shows that the black card pocket on the rear pastedown was provided for the convenience of readers and did not originally hold supplementary maps or plates.
