Réponse aux Docteurs Modernes, First edition of Linguet's attack on Montesquieu and his philosophe supporters, continuing the extensive critique offered by Linguet in his 1767 absolutist treatise Theorie des Lois Civiles. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet (1736-1794) was a French journalist and lawyer "whose delight in taking views opposing everyone else's earned him exiles, imprisonment, and finally the guillotine" (Encyclopaedia Britannica online). His rejection of Montesquieu, perhaps the most respected of the enlightenment writers, fitted neatly with his contrarian aims.
