Original offprint, giving an account of the life and works of Leonardo Pisano, better known as Fibonacci (1170-1240), whose Liber abaci (1202) was the first European work to introduce Indian and Arabian mathematics. His name is known to modern mathematicians mainly because of the Fibonacci sequence, derived from a problem in the Liber abaci. "Much less appreciated is the role Liber Abaci plays in the development of present value calculation... Fibonacci illustrates his methods of calculation through several numerical examples. Among these are four types of applications to investments: (1) the fair allocation of profits to members of a partnership... (2) the calculation of profits from a series from a sequence of investments, with intermediate withdrawals... (3) the calculation of future value... and (4) the calculation of present value" (Rubinstein, A History of the Theory of Investments, pp. 3-4).
