Second edition, published the same year as the first, of this popular work comparing the British and French political economies, this copy from the library of André Morellet, a collection which was largely acquired as reading material during the preparation of his Encyclopédie. Although it claimed to be a translation, Plumard de Dangeul published the Remarques using his English pseudonym John Nickolls. It "quickly became the talk of Paris, went into a second edition within a fortnight, and two more before the end of the year. Mainstream periodicals excerpted the book, and even the king claimed to be reading it" (Shovlin, p. 45)."From the 1750s until his death at age ninety-one in 1819, André Morellet formed a collection of over 4,700 titles with strong holdings of English language works, Elzevir editions, and eighteenth-century publications on political economy... After completing his degree in theology in 1752, André Morellet (1727-1819) became recognized in Parisian literary circles as a writer of articles for the Encyclopédie and a supporter of liberal causes: religious tolerance, inoculation, penal reform, liberty of the press and freedom of commerce.
