Second edition of Bentham's French work on crime and punishment, edited, arranged and translated from his unpublished manuscripts by his Swiss collaborator Étienne Dumont. This work was first published in English as The Rationale of Reward, (London, J. & H. Hunt, 1825) and The Rationale of Punishment, (London, R. Heward, 1830), both translated and edited by Richard Smith. Provenance: From the library of George Warde Norman (1793-1882), writer on finance, director of the Bank of England from 1821-1872, and friend of George Grote the historian.
