A Letter from a Gentleman in Town to his Friend in the Country, Recommending the Necessity of Frugality. First edition of this epistolary tract on the virtue of frugality and the correlation between private and public economy, an early issue in which the imprint in square brackets is "price three pence" and catchword on p. 23 is "for". The author urges the reader, "at a time that this poor nation (once the envy, but now the reproach of her neighbours) is bending under the heavy load of taxes" and national debts, to manage their personal finances stringently.
