The major work of the French philosopher and writer Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1709-1785), a series of dialogues with the 4th century BC Athenian statesman Phocion. Mably's works exerted a wide influence on political thought in eighteenth-century France and on Jean-Jacques Rousseau in particular, who, at one time, was a tutor to the Mably family.
