This Singapore (Our City of Dreadful Night). First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "B. V. Slater, with the best regards of N. I. Low, London 7/12/56". Published shortly after the Second World War, this work records experiences of Singapore under the Japanese occupation, including daily life during the war, guerrilla resistance, collaboration and survival under the Japanese administration, and the aftermath of liberation. The book preserves a number of contemporary accounts from wartime Singapore, including the return of women forcibly sent to Japanese military "comfort stations" in Indonesia. The subtitle, (Our City of Dreadful Nights), echoes Rudyard Kipling's The City of Dreadful Night (1888).B. V. Slater was a classicist who edited the Oxford Latin Dictionary in 1947-49.
