Narrative of a Journey to Morocco, in 1863 and 1864... with Geological Annotations. First edition, presentation copy from a subscriber, James Yates, inscribed on the half-title, "To Mr and Mrs John William Crompton, with kind regards, from Mr and Mrs James Yates, Lauderdale House, Highgate, June 1868". Yates was married to the Cromptons daughter, Dorothea. This handsomely produced book was published in the year of Hodgkin's death and is seldom found in such respectable condition.Hodgkin (1798-1866), after whom Hodgkin's lymphoma is named, travelled to Morocco with Sir Moses Montefiore, the Anglo-Jewish leader and philanthropist. They travelled in the wake of the Safi Affair of 1863, when two Jewish men were charged with poisoning a Spanish national in the Moroccan city of Safi. Montefiore was intent on securing the release of the Jewish prisoners. "For Hodgkin the journey to Morocco was both a pleasure trip and a geologic excursion … he took notes on the ethnology and geography … and described the flora and fauna, the antiquities, water systems, buildings, and agricultural methods encountered during the nearly five-month trip" (Rosenfeld, p. 248).Before departing for Palestine on what turned out to be his final journey (he died at Jaffa in April 1866), Hodgkin entrusted the manuscript of the book to the publisher Thomas Cautley Newby.
