Buddhism in China. First edition of this historical and thematic study by the sinologist Samuel Beal, the first scholar to translate early Buddhist texts directly from the Chinese. Following service in China as a naval chaplain, he studied the Buddhist texts in the India Office Library and, in 1877, was appointed professor of Chinese at University College, London.
