Autograph letter signed from Robert Louis Stevenson to a recipient in Australia. A letter written from Stevenson's Samoan home at Vailima, addressed to a correspondent in Australia, requesting the shipment of mangosteens and lychee trees for cultivation in Samoa. Stevenson offers to send something in return, noting that the botany of the Samoan Islands was "very little studied".Stevenson (1850-1894) settled in Samoa in 1890 after several years of travel in the Pacific and remained there until his death in 1894. During this period, he established Vailima as his permanent home and continued his literary work while overseeing the development of the estate alongside his wife. The present letter dates from the middle of his Samoan residence and records practical concerns connected with the cultivation and improvement of the land.Provenance: Martin Schøyen.
