First edition of Coomaraswamy's classic work on the religious tales of Hinduism and Buddhism, finishing what was started by Sister Nivedita, in a seemingly deluxe embossed binding. The production of the 32 iconic plates were overseen by Abanindranath Tagore, with 5 done by himself. First edition; 8vo (24 x 17 cm); 32 colour plates with captioned tissue guards; contemporary (original ?) limp calf, blind embossed Ganesh to upper board, blind lettering to spine, top edge gilt, others uncut, partly unopened, a fine copy.
