LUM, Bertha (illus.).
Inquire · Offered by Peter Harrington
Peiping and North China. Second, expanded edition of this attractive tourist handbook. The illustrator, Bertha Lum (1869-1954) was an accomplished woodblock artist who helped popularize the style outside of Asia. Lum was closely linked to Beijing's Grand Hotel des Wagons Lits, selling her works in the foyer's souvenir shop; her illustration for the hotel's advert on pages 54-5 is particularly fine. The text was contributed by Lum's daughter, Eleanor "Peter" Lum. The first edition was issued in red wrappers and with 58 pages of text, rather than the 88 here.
