MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA: A TRILOGY. First edition, trade issue, of Eugene O'Neill's famous retelling of the Oresteia. A lovely association copy, inscribed by O'Neill the month following publication: "To Doctor & Mrs. Babbott - with grateful memories of a delightful summer at their Beacon Farm where I put in the final touches on this trilogy - Eugene O'Neill Dec. 1931." Accompanied by the original lease attending Eugene and Carlotta O'Neill's renting of Beacon Farm from June 10 through October 15, 1931, for the sum of $3500. The lease is signed in full by both Eugene and Carlotta, by the owner, Frank L. Babbott, Jr., as well as his attorney. O'Neill and Babbitt have each initialed three clauses in the body of the contract. The property was located at Eaton's Neck, Northport, Long Island, and based on the number of photographs extant of the O'Neills there, it was a happy, productive summer and led into the autumn production of this play trilogy.
