The book describes Cohen's travels to thirty Jewish communities in twelve European countries between the World Wars, giving important observations of European Jewry before the ravages of the Holocaust - it is dedicated "to the memory of my Jewish fellow-writers whose last journey ended in the Nazi death-camps".Cohen (1879-1961), born in Manchester to Polish Jewish parents, was an important early Zionist: "Actively involved in the Zionist movement from 1895, he played a noteworthy role in its achievements, being particularly concerned with maintaining good relations between the Zionist pioneers and the press" (ODNB).
