History of the Insurrection in China; First edition of this description of the Taiping Rebellion, co-written by two officials attached to the French diplomatic corps in Canton in the 1840s. Callery (1810-1862), a missionary-sinologist, served as an interpreter, while Yvan (1803-1873) was the embassy physician. They shared an interest in natural history and plant collecting, Callery giving his name to the species of pear introduced to Europe from China.By the outbreak of the rebellion, both men had returned to Paris. Their history is strengthened by eyewitness dispatches sent by acquaintances still in China. It was first published in French (1853), and an American edition followed the same year.
