Mailer, Norman:
$550 · Offered by William Reese Company
[Original One Sheet Film Poster for:] MAIDSTONE A MYSTERY. The original one-sheet publicity poster released to accompany the originally quite limited US distribution of Norman Mailer's controversial, seldom seen, essentially script-less political statement, staring himself, Rip Torn, Joy Bang, Harris Yulin, Ultra Violet and an assembly of friends and neighbors. D.A. Pennebaker was one of the credited cinematographers. The final 110 minute release was edited, in part, by Mailer from over forty hours of footage. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September of 1970, and premiered in the US in March of 1971 at the USA Film Festival at SMU (where this cataloguer saw it). Its subsequent efforts at theatrical release were short-lived and largely unsuccessful and it was seldom praised by reviewers. Thereafter, for years it languished in obscurity, revived only occasionally for festival screenings and limited digital release. Supreme Mix Productions was the umbrella over Mailer's two earlier films, Wild 90 and Beyond the Law.
