Many of the plates are after Hurley's photographs, and around half appear in print for the first time. The jacket shows the Endurance in the ice.Hurley (1885-1962) was born in Glebe, Sydney, and quickly became interested in photography, buying his own Kodak box camera for 15 shillings. In 1911 Sir Douglas Mawson invited Hurley to be the official photographer on the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, and from December 1911 to March 1913 Hurley worked "enthusiastically under arduous conditions, taking both still photographs and movie film, and his high spirits made him a popular and valued member of the team" (Australian Dictionary of Biography). Hurley joined Shackleton's Antarctic expedition in 1914 - his photographs have come to define the expedition's heroic struggle for survival.
