[Two Autograph Notes, Signed ("Peter M"), and One Typed Letter, Signed in Full]. Three items relating to Matthiessen's work on his prize-winning book, THE SNOW LEOPARD, to John Harrison, Yale librarian and bibliographer, in part writing to thank him for help in his research. The t.l.s. is the most formal and likely begins the correspondence: "I was astonished, and most grateful, on opening this fine packet on the snow leopard... I am greedy enough to take you up on your kind offer of further research: anything you might have on the yeti (abominable s'man) and on the Dolpo-Dhaulagiri region of west Nepal would be most appreciated...." He concludes with further thanks and promises to meet when he is next in New Haven. The next letter, an a.l.s ("Peter M") follows up on its predecessor: "Many thanks for this new document - very exciting, I think. I hope you got my note of thanks of last week - am off next week to Nepal...." The next item, an a.n.s. ("Peter M"), is again an expression of gratitude: "Dear John have read through Yeti + snow leopard notes with profit and pleasure - many thanks again...." The additional items is a t.l.s. from an editorial assistant at Viking Penguin, 3 January 1979, forwarding a copy of THE SNOW LEOPARD: "Mr Matthiessen wanted to make sure you got to see the fruit of your labors and assistance...." THE SNOW LEOPARD won the 1979 National Book Award in the category for Contemporary Thought and the 1980 National Book Award for Nonfiction.
