Album Historique de l'Ecole de l'Etoile du Matin 1888 à 1925. = Gyosei Gakko kinen-jo. Sole edition, celebrating 25 years since the official certification of Gyosei High School. This school was set up by the Society of Mary as one of the first Catholic schools in Japan and was visited by famous figures such as Prince Saionji Kinmochi and the marshal of France, Joseph Joffre. After Pierre-Marie Osouf was made the Bishop of Tokyo in 1876, he encouraged Catholic societies to send missionaries to open schools. In 1888, five members of the Society of Mary led by Alphonse Heinrich (future principal) set up in Tokyo's Kyobashi district, modelling their school on the Collège Stanislas in Paris. It was officially certified in 1899 and remains in operation today. This photobook, the oldest known anniversary publication by the school, opens with a history of its first 25 years. It continues with maps of the campus and a large number of photographic illustrations. They show the school's teachers, uniforms, facilities, graduating classes, and champion sports teams. The final pages feature portraits of famous French and Japanese figures who had visited, such as the marshal of France, Joseph Joffre; the governor-general of French Indochina, Martial Henri Merlin; Prince Saionji Kinmochi; Shibusawa Ei'ichi; and the president of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce, Inabata Katsutaro.
