First edition, presentation copy to William Tecumseh Sherman, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Boston, Mass: July 9th, 1890 - Respectfully forwarded - T. W. Porter". The posthumous bookplate of Sherman, and that of his son Philemon Tecumseh Sherman (1867-1941), are on the front pastedown.Porter was colonel in the 14th Maine Volunteer Infantry in the war. His 24-page polemical essay argues that the war revealed Grant as the man providentially suited to preserve the Union, in contrast to the delay and caution of the other Union commanders.
