ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (TOM SAWYER'S COMRADE). By "Mark Twain" [pseud] [with:] THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER. By "Mark Twain" [pseud]: First U.S. edition, first printing, mixed early issue, with the following points: the title is integral with copyright taken in 1884 (second of two possible forms for clothbound copies); p.13 lists the plate "Him and Another Man" at p.88 (earliest state); p.57 reads 'with the was' (earliest state); p.283 is a cancel (third state); p. 9: 'Decided' in chapter heading of Chapter VI, (later corrected to 'Decides'); and the portrait is in state 1. Page 155, however, has the final '5' replaced with the slightly larger '5', and the final blank is present. In regard to other observed typographical anomalies, page 59, line 7 from the bottom ends with 'le' ('let' in later copies), with the damaged 'd' in the line below; and on p.143, the 'l' in 'Col' is missing, and the 'b' of 'body' is damaged. Accompanied by: THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER. Hartford [etc.]: The American Publishing Company, 1888. Original deep blue cloth, decorated in gilt and black. Frontis and illustrations. Light wear at extremities, otherwise a very good copy of this later printing in original format, bearing the private ownership stamp of John Jay Pierrepont in the upper margin of the title indicative of common provenance with its companion.
