THE SNAKE'S PASS: A NOVEL. First U.S. edition of Stoker's first novel, published as No. 685 of the New Series of the Franklin Square Library. The UK edition was published on the 18th of November, though postdated 1891 on the titlepage. The possibility that this printing may precede the UK printing has occasionally been suggested. Predating his substantial success with Dracula (1897), this is a tale of treasure hunting in the west of Ireland and relies more on sensational elements than any supernatural involvement. "A tale written around the strange phenomenon of a moving bog. Scene: the Mayo coast, which is finely described. Hidden treasure, prophetic dreams, attempted murder, and much love and sentiment are bound up with the story. The sentiment is pure and even lofty. There is no bigotry nor bias, and no vulgar stage-Irishism" - Brown, Ireland in Fiction.
