The Bright Blue Sky

Mr. Symond's new novel is a deceptively quiet tale of the death of an old love and the beginning of a new one. It is told in two time sequences: the past, relived in Richard Wilmshurt's memory as he recalls his first falling in love with Ann Birrel, at whose funeral the story opens, and the present, in which his feelings for Mrs. Lovell develops into a different form of love. In both these affairs he has a rival, Edward Swan, a sinister character who has in fact married Ann, and seems to have been connected with her sudden and unexpected death.
