The Heat of the Day. Screenplay, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Clive Hirschhorn from Harold Pinter", together with a note from the author addressed to "Dear Peter" enclosing the script. Pinter's adaptation of Bowen's 1949 novel starred Patricia Hodge, Michael York, and Michael Gambon. There are minor differences from the script published by Faber & Faber in 1989.In scenes featuring Gambon and Hodge, "the Pinter influence is most obvious, in conversations constructed from spare, precise dialogue and significant pauses in which the viewer is consistently invited to find more than lies on the surface" (Waymark).Pinter's adaptation was first broadcast on 30 December 1989, and was directed by Christopher Morahan. It was published by Faber & Faber in 1989 and, later, within the third volume of Collected Screenplays in 2000.
