with illustrations of Egypt Allan spent a year from 1841-1842 travelling in the Mediterranean. The plates are after drawings by the author and illustrate sites mostly in Egypt but there are also views of Rhodes, Cos, Asia Minor, and Greece. The author was amateur archaeologist and also a ship owner and, probably as a result of the opportunities this offered for travel, developed an interest in antiquities. He was a long standing member of both the Athenian Archaeological Society and the Egyptian Society of Cairo. Second edition. Folio (37.5 x 28 cm), additional lithograph title page heightened in gold, some foxing to the title-page, 40 lithographs, 67 wood-engraved text vignettes, inner hinges slightly cracked; bound in publisher's green blindstamped cloth, decorated with a gilt pictorial motif on upper cover, spine gilt lettered, a little worn and rubbed to the extremities, cloth faded in parts ; else a very good copy; vi 96pp. Atabey 15; Blackmer 24; Abbey Travel 200.
